CON.TXT strives to provide an accessible environment for all attendees, online as well as in person. Read our Accessibility Policy for more details. In this post, we share what you can expect at CON.TXT 2023 in terms of accessibility and provide guidance on how you can contribute to accessibility at the con.

If you are an attendee

ATTENDING PANELS
Zoom live captioning will be available for all panels. Moderators have been provided with guidance on creating accessible programming (details further down in this post). In short, you can expect the following:
  • Panel handouts and/or slides will be provided ahead of time (one hour prior to panel start at the latest)
  • Moderators will use text color, font, and font size that contribute to ease of reading
  • Audio captioning will be available through Zoom
Please do your part in creating an accessible environment by following moderator guidance on when you should be muted, where to chat, and how to share questions and comments. If the moderator doesn't offer guidance:
  • Keep your microphone muted when you are not speaking
  • Use the Raise Hand feature if you have a question or comment and wait to unmute until you are called on
  • State your badge name before speaking so that everyone can follow the discussion
DISCORD PARTICIPATION
  • Don't use emoji in your Discord username
  • Avoid using large blocks of emoji. One or two is fine; a string is not
  • Don't use rapidly flashing GIFs
PARTICIPATING ASYNCHRONOUSLY
CON.TXT 2023 panels and events will not be recorded and will not be available for viewing after the fact. We do this to maintain participant privacy. We recognize that at times you will be interested in two or more pieces of programming that are scheduled opposite each other. Please remember that making recordings for your own use is prohibited by the Code of Conduct.

You will be able to play vid shows at any time at or after the original vid show start time. Vid shows will be available for viewing for at least two weeks after the con.
VID SHOWS
Subtitles will be available for all vids in the Premieres and Nearly New shows. Some subtitles may be available for vids in other shows. Vid show playlists that include the vid name, fandom, audio, and content notes will be made available ahead of time for perusal for all vid shows.

If you are moderating a panel

To help us foster an accessible environment for all attendees, we have some guidelines for moderators as you create programming for the con.
PLANNING
  • Provide materials ahead of time. If you have slides or a document you'll be reading from, post it in your panel's Discord channel at least one hour before your panel starts and tag ConCom to pin it for you.
  • Provide captions or transcripts if you are playing video or audio clips as part of your panel.
  • Use appropriate Content Notes. Vid shows are expected to follow our Content Notes Policy. Panelists are encouraged to send any content notes for their panel to panels@contxt.club so we can add them to the panel description.
CREATING SLIDES
  • Explain acronyms and terms. Consider starting off with a brief definition of your terms.
  • Make text big enough to read. A good guideline is to use a font size of 18 or larger for body text.
  • Use an easy-to-read font. Calibri and Arial may be plain, but they're easy to read! Avoid fonts that are ornate or very thin for the body of your slides.
  • Use high contrast colors. You should use either a light font on a dark background or a dark font on a light background. You can use the WebAIM color contrast checker to see whether two colors are high enough contrast; aim for the AA rating for the body (normal) text.
  • Limit use of animations in your slides. Some animations can be distracting or make people ill.
PRESENTING
  • Use a microphone or headset, and do your best to limit background noise. This makes it easier for people to hear and understand you.
  • Don't speak too fast. This will give people following the captions time to catch up and will make it easier for everyone to follow along.
  • Cover all the information on your slides. If you have text on your slides, make sure you cover it. You don't need to read things out verbatim, but you should cover all the information verbally.
  • Give people time to process information. Short pauses between topics or pieces of information give everyone time to process.
  • Describe visuals like images and video.
  • Repeat questions from the chat before answering them.
  • Ask participants to mention their name or handle each time they speak.

Contact Us

If you have any questions about these guidelines, or if you would like to inform us of an accessibility need before or during the convention, please contact safety@contxt.club.

We’re back with another all-virtual CON.TXT, and we need volunteers to help out with Discord and Zoom! Volunteers will receive a $5 discount on their registration.

We are looking for volunteers to help us with:

Monitoring channels (text-based, no voice channels) on the con's Discord server by reading everything posted to your assigned channels during your volunteer time slot and reporting code of conduct issues.

Hosting and monitoring panels on Zoom by assisting presenters with screen sharing, monitoring the Zoom chat, and reporting technical and code of conduct issues.

We will host several 1–2 hour optional training sessions for volunteers on how to use Discord and Zoom, so volunteers with little or no knowledge of these platforms (or with lots of knowledge and a low comfort level) are welcome! Training sessions will be at 3pm Eastern Daylight time on June 10 and 7pm on June 13 for Zoom volunteers, and the training sessions for Discord volunteers will be at 7pm on June 13 and 3pm on June 17; these times are all in Eastern Daylight time (what time is that for me?).

Please note, all volunteers will be required to attend a 1-hour training session on volunteer responsibilities. Multiple times will be offered in the two weeks before the con.

If you’d like to volunteer, please fill out this survey by 10pm Eastern Daylight Time on Friday, June 9. All volunteers will receive a $5 registration refund, to be processed after this deadline.

We're excited to announce that the schedule of panels for CON.TXT 2023 is available on Conline! Note that you won't be able to see details unless you're registered. You can also see the schedule as a Google Sheets spreadsheet.

Thank you to all our fantastic panel mods; we wouldn't be able to run this con without you.

If your panel didn't make it in, we'll have DIY slots available throughout the weekend. You'll also be able to organize informal panels in the CON.TXT Discord server.

As a reminder, you need to register on Conline in order to attend the con. Learn more about registration. Moreover, if you're a panel mod but have not signed up on Conline, your name won't be listed on your panels until you have done so. Registration is still open and will be through midnight EDT June 15th, so sign up if you're mulling it over!

As a reminder, submissions to Premieres and Nearly New are due this Sunday, May 14 at 11:59 PM EDT. Learn more about submitting those vids.

Recently, CON.TXT was asked about Code of Conduct sanctions against Franzeska.

In 2020, CON.TXT instituted an open-ended ban from the con for Franzeska based on a pattern of racist posts outside of convention spaces. While we don't generally monitor behavior outside of con spaces, the posts met our standard for repeated and egregious behavior.

We did not publicize the ban at the time both because it wasn't incited by a recent incident and because our general policy is to keep all individuals in Safety reports anonymous. However, after the recent questions and internal discussion we have decided that it's important to share the action we took.

We made this decision because:
  • Franzeska is a prominent figure in fandom
  • The posts in question were and still are highly visible
  • The ban was not based on a Safety report but on behavior CON.TXT staff observed firsthand
Our goal for our Code of Conduct and Safety procedures is to foster a safer, welcoming, and enjoyable space for all attendees rather than to be punitive. In this case, we weighed privacy concerns against placing an additional burden on fans trying to determine if our space was friendly to them and decided we needed to be transparent about this sanction.

If you have questions or concerns about this decision or our Safety procedures, or if you would like to make a Safety report, please contact us at safety@contxt.club.

If you haven't voted on panels for CON.TXT 2023 yet, you have under four hours to do so! Panel voting closes at midnight EDT tonight, April 17 (what time is that for me?).

We need your input what the panels you'd like to see and which Open panels—panels in need of mods—you would like to volunteer to moderate.

We have a lot of Open panels this year, and a lot of chances to get involved! You don’t need to have modded a panel before—we’ll have guidance and resources for new mods. You can rank up to five of your top choices of panels to moderate. (Don’t worry—we won’t assign you to more than three panels!)

If you suggested or volunteered to mod a panel in the panel proposal post and see it listed in the poll as an Open panel, please select it as one of your mod choices in the poll if you are still interested!

If you suggested a panel and made arrangements in the panel proposal post to co-mod it with another person, you will still see it listed as an Open panel unless you specifically edited or commented on your post to mark it as Closed. We will contact you to find out if you still need additional co-mods before we assign any more people.

We strive to offer a well-balanced and wide range of panel topics. The voting tells us which panels are the most popular, but it also helps us choose among similar panels and decide which suggestions might be better combined. We don't use a strict numbers cut-off to determine our programming.

We're looking forward to seeing you all (virtually) at CON.TXT 2023! Vote now for your preferred panels.

Twitter authentication for Conline (the platform we use for CON.TXT) is likely to disappear in the next month! Conline is advising all users to switch to Google authentication, following the instructions below.

To connect Conline to your Google account, use Twitter to login, then go to conline.club/account/#nav-login and click Connect next to Google.

If that errors, you already created a separate account with that Google account. In that case, email conlinefo@gmail.com from the emails of BOTH accounts and Lithiumdoll, Conline's owner, will merge them.

Conline does not recommend using Facebook to log in due to its unreliability, but if that option is currently working you would use the same procedure.

We're now accepting vid submissions for the Premieres and Nearly New shows at CON.TXT 2023!

Vids for both Premieres and Nearly New will be due by 11:59 PM EDT on Sunday, May 14 (what time is that for me?). This deadline is firm. There is a slight chance that we may be able to grant a very short extension, so if you think you may need one, please email us at vids@contxt.club as soon as possible.

You don't need to be registered for CON.TXT 2023 to submit vids to either show, but vids from registered attendees will be prioritized if we receive more vids than will fit in the show. You will need to create a Conline account and join the CON.TXT Conline page to submit your vids.

PREMIERES INTEREST POLL

To help us gauge how many premieres we should plan for, please fill out this quick interest poll. This step is optional and doesn't commit you to anything!

PREMIERES GUIDELINES

We accept premieres for any fandom and with any type of content, but if it would be helpful to you to get a sense of the typical tone of CON.TXT vid shows, you can check out the 2021 playlist. Vidders may submit up to 2 premiering vids, or up to 3 if one or more of the vids is a collaboration with another vidder.

Prior to submitting, please remember that a premieres USB and/or DVD will be distributed as part of optional con bags, and by submitting a premiere you're allowing it to be included on this USB/DVD.

Full requirements and instructions for upload are listed below. In brief, we will need a YouTube or Vimeo upload and a downloadable copy to be included in the con bag USB/DVD.

NEARLY NEW GUIDELINES

Nearly New vids are those first posted online or shown at a con in the last year (on May 1, 2022 or later). Vidders may submit up to 2 vids to Nearly New, or up to 3 if one or more of the vids is a collaboration with another vidder.

Instructions for upload are listed below.

Please register on Conline to join us for CON.TXT 2023 from June 23-25, 2023!

Like CON.TXT 2021, this year’s CON.TXT will be entirely virtual, with the con schedule accessible on Conline, panels taking place over Zoom, and socializing on our Discord server. More details will be available as we get closer to the con.

Registration for CON.TXT 2023 closes at midnight Eastern Daylight Time, on Thursday, June 22nd (what time is that for me?). Discord invites will go out on the afternoon of Friday, June 23, before the pre-con events start that evening.

HOW TO REGISTER

  • Create a Conline account if you do not already have one (you will need a Google, Twitter, or Facebook account to sign up—we suggest creating a throwaway account if you do not want to link to your existing social media)
  • Register for CON.TXT
  • Don't worry if your membership shows as pending after you register! This is normal and your membership will be confirmed within 24 hours of payment.

The CON.TXT page will be updated with news and the con program once it’s available. If you have any questions about using Conline, you can reference the FAQ for con attendees.

CON.TXT is an 18+ con—by registering, you are confirming that you are or will be 18 years of age or older at the time of the con. Your registration also confirms that you agree to abide by our Code of Conduct.

REGISTRATION OPTIONS

We have multiple registration options this year, with costs varying depending on when you sign up!
  • Early bird registration is open through Friday, March 31, and costs $20.
  • Regular registration is open from Saturday, April 1 through Friday, May 26, and costs $25.
  • Late registration is open from Thursday, June 8 through Thursday, June 22, and costs $30.
All deadlines are at midnight, Eastern Daylight Time.

Registration costs include processing fees, payable using Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Scholarships are available for fans of color and anyone unable to afford the registration cost—please get in touch with us at registration@contxt.club to apply. You do not need to disclose any details of your personal circumstances in order to qualify. Scholarship application deadline is Friday, June 16, at midnight Eastern Daylight Time.

GIFT BAGS

We’re also offering gift bags this year! Gift bags include a DVD or USB of the 2023 Premieres vid show, enamel pin, vinyl sticker, and printed program. For those residing in the United States, gift bags can be purchased for an additional $20 on the base ticket price—this includes shipping costs and cost of producing the gift bag contents. For international attendees, there is an additional $15 shipping charge. Please select the option that works for you, and make sure you add your mailing address when you register.

We'll keep you posted here and on Twitter! You can also join our mailing list for updates.

We are now taking panel suggestions for CON.TXT 2023! Please read this post and comment with your suggestions using the template below.

All attendees and those considering attending are welcome to suggest panels, regardless of whether or not you want to moderate them.

You may submit a panel suggestion as an open or closed panel.

Save your vid show suggestions—we'll take them in an upcoming post!

Panel suggestions will remain open through March 6, 2023.

To propose a panel for CON.TXT 2023, please comment on this post with the following information:

Title: A Short Yet Interesting Title
Mod(s): The badge name(s) of interested moderator(s)—please list your own badge name if you would like to moderate
Open or Closed: Use “Open” if you would like the panels committee to assign mods to this panel. Use “Closed” if the co-mods named are prepared to mod the panel on their own.
Category: Meta, Multi-fandom, Single Fandom, Activity, How-to
Description: This is a longer description of the panel, which will be included in the con program. This should be as specific as you can be in a paragraph!
Other notes: These notes will not be part of the final listing for the panel and will not appear in the con program, but can include things like technology requirements or general thoughts on panel content which you'd like to flesh out in further comments.

Most full-length panels are 50 minutes long but we have had panels run for a longer duration, so please note if you think your panel suggestion needs more time.

To propose a change or expansion to an already-suggested panel or to volunteer as an additional moderator for one, please reply to the suggestion and not to the main post so that each panel's discussion is threaded. Note that if two suggestions seem very similar we may merge them into one, so check what's already been proposed before suggesting a new panel. If a similar idea exists, comment to ask if the original suggester wants to work with your ideas.

Mark your calendars: CON.TXT 2023 will be held online June 23-25, 2023!

We originally had plans to hold an in-person con, but various factors including the ongoing pandemic, a possible recession, and the state of the hotel and convention industry mean a virtual convention is the best choice for us right now. We're really excited, though, and have lots of ideas for how to make this the best virtual CON.TXT yet!

Specifics will be coming in early 2023. We look forward to seeing you all again next summer! In the meantime, we'll keep you posted here and on Twitter. You can also join our mailing list to get updates.
