Today is the last day to pre-register for CON.TXT 2018 online. After tomorrow, you will have to wait and pay $140 at the door. So if you've been procrastinating, take a break from your 4th of July barbecue and sign up here!

Also, and more importantly, today is the last day to book a hotel room at the con rate. After today, you can still book a room, but you won't get the con rate and we will likely give up the rooms leftover in our block and the hotel could fill up. So if you are still thinking about whether to get a hotel room or not, please do it today!

If you have already booked your hotel room, be sure you booked it under the con rate referencing "CON.TXT Women in Media Event". To book your room call 800-331-3131 or use this direct link: CON.TXT Women in Media Event.  Get all the details about our hotel here.

Are you looking for a way to be more involved with CON.TXT? How about volunteering at the con?

Volunteering can be a great way to participate in the con if you're new or feeling nervous. You'll have a place to be, designated things to do, and tasks that can range between social, lightly-social, and hardly-social-at-all.

Jobs:

Security/registration - check that everyone coming into the con space has a badge, loan out Upsuite badges, give panels their 5 minute warning. This is a seated assignment. You will always be working with another volunteer with a concom member nearby. Volunteers needed all day Friday-Sunday.

Downsuite set up - help concom members and other volunteers set up the Downsuite. Volunteers needed Friday morning before panels start.

Fan Fair set up and staffing - help concom members and other volunteers set up and staff the Orphans table during the Fan Fair. Volunteers needed Saturday afternoon.

Breakdown - help concom members and other volunteers pack up the Upsuite and the Downsuite after the con is over. Volunteers needed Sunday afternoon.

If you would like to volunteer, please fill out this survey  by July 18th to let us know your job preference(s) and what time slots you are available.

This year's schedule of panels and activities is ready and you can see it on the CON.TXT website now. Thanks to all our fantastic panel mods who have volunteered! We'd like to highlight a few things that we're excited about this year:
  • Since the Do It Yourself panel slots have been very popular in the past, we are offering 15 DIY panel slots this year. We will have more info about how to sign up for them closer to the con.
  • We will again have some panels that run 85 minutes instead of 55, and for the panels we expect to be very popular, we will have double sized room.
  • We've provided hashtags for each panel if you'd like to livepost it on Twitter. (please remember, it is a violation of the CON.TXT Code of Conduct to take and share con-goers picture without permission, though!)
So go take a look at the schedule and start planning out your weekend!

We will likely still be working out some small details, like extra co-mods or last minute schedule moves over the next few weeks, so it is alway subject to change.

Are you coming to CON.TXT 2018? Are you as excited as we are? We are hard at work planning the best con we can for you, but we also wanted to give the CON.TXT community a place to check-in, say hi, and start talking about the con. So we're opening this post for you.

If you are coming to CON.TXT, please comment on this post and say hi. Be sure to mention your badge name so people can find you at the con, but also tell us what your current fannish obsessions are, and what you're looking most forward to at CON.TXT. Thinking about having a room party or want to plan a group dinner for people in a particular fandom?  Have a proposal for a DIY panel and want to gauge interest in it? Are you new to CON.TXT or the DC area this year and want to ask some questions? Are you a CON.TXT veteran and want to offer some tips? This is the place to start that conversation!

It has been a rough summer so far and there is a lot of serious and not-fun stuff going on in the world right now. So think of this post as a place where you can take a tiny break from all that and get hyped for CON.TXT, like a pre-con cocktail party. Come share the joy of fandom with us!

If you don't have a Dreamwidth account, that's fine, you can post anonymously, but be sure to tell us your badge name! If you don't want to post here, but want to start talking about CON.TXT on Twitter, please use the hashtag #contxt2018.

We'll be announcing the panels schedule very soon.

Got stuff you want to sell, but not enough to get a Fan Fair table? Got stuff you want to sell, but you’re not coming to the con? Sell it at the Orphans Table!

This year, the Orphans Table will only be out during the Fan Fair, but you can drop off Orphans merchandise at registration any time before 1 PM Saturday. As usual, 20% of the price of Orphans merchandise goes to support the con, and the rest goes to you! (Please, no items priced under $5; if you have smaller things you want to sell, bundle them into $5 lots.)

You can send merch to the Orphans Table even if you’re not attending the con! Email dealers@con-txt.net to arrange to ship your items. If you have unsold merch after the con, you can arrange to have it sent back (with the cost of your chosen shipping method taken out of your cut of the sales) or to donate it locally.

We will also have the Swap Table out all through the weekend, for any items you don’t care about selling but know someone must want. You can take or leave items from the table all weekend long; anything remaining will be donated (to thrift stores, libraries, or zine archives as appropriate) at the end of the con. Payment isn’t required for anything on the Swap Table, but we’ll have a donation tin out for our con charities, the Cancer Research Institute and the DC Center for the LGBT Community.

And it’s not too late to sign up for the Fan Fair! You can buy any number of half-tables at our Eventbrite registration page. The member rate is $10 per half-table.

(NB: If you are waiting to see what programming is up against the Fair before buying your table, we should have the schedule out very soon, but the window after that to make sure you get your name on the vendor page of the program may be short. However, if you don’t care about being in the program, there should still be tables available, and we are planning to have a few for sale at the door as well.

If you are a panelist, and you want to sell at the Fan Fair, and you did NOT list the Fan Fair as a conflict in your scheduling email reply, PLEASE CONTACT panels@con-txt.net ASAP so we can make sure you’re not scheduled against it!)

Have you reserved your hotel room for CON.TXT 2018 yet? If you've been waiting or keep forgetting to do it, don't put it off! The con rate is only available until July 5th and DC area hotels are so full for the summer that the hotel has been asking us to release some of our room block. We definitely don't want to do that and have any of our attendees miss out on a room.

Real talk. We are behind on filling up our contractual room requirement based on where we were at this same time in 2016, so we're a little concerned. If you are local-ish and have been trying to decide whether to get a room or not, please consider doing so. Never fear, not meeting our minimum will not stop the con from happening. We promise! But we just want to give you a little nudge if you're on the fence or procrastinating.

If you have already booked your hotel room, be sure you booked it under the con rate referencing "CON.TXT Women in Media Event". To book your room call 800-331-3131 or use this direct link: CON.TXT Women in Media Event.  Get all the details about our hotel here.

 UPDATED 6/18:

The panel votes are tallied and the schedule is coming together, but we are still looking for a few more people to join our cohort of forty-something panel moderators. We have eight popular panels with no moderators at all and four with only one moderator who'd like to work with a co-mod or two.

At CON.TXT, a panel moderator leads (or co-leads) a discussion among the attendees. Generally mods prepare leading questions to keep the conversation moving; some panels include a lengthier presentation by the moderator. We can work with you ahead of the con if you'd like some guidance.

Interested? Email us asap to volunteer as a moderator.

The following panels currently have no moderators, so if you take them on you're welcome to update the descriptions to your satisfaction -- but remember that they were voted in based on the current descriptions, so you might want to keep that in mind.

Title: Writing Outside the Binary  (Meta)

Description: What are good fandoms and communities in fandom for non-binary-gendered or genderqueer characters (canon or fanon)? What are good fanworks to rec? Share the joy of writing an OT4 where everybody has a different pronoun, talk about what we'd like to see in fandom and fanworks, and share tips on writing nonbinary and genderqueer characters.

Title: But That Wasn't in the Book!  (Multi-Fandom)

Description: Novels have always been translated to the screen, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Let's talk about the most recent adaptations (A Wrinkle in Time, Altered Carbon, Game of Thrones, whatever else). What makes them better or worse? What books haven't been made into movies that need to be? What should never have been touched?

Title: Fandom Drought  (Multi-Fandom)

Description: I haven't found a new pairing since Hannibal was cancelled. What do you do to find a new fandom or pairing? How long have you ever been without a fandom? Come pimp your fandom or hear about obscure ones.

Title: Large Fandom Speed Dating  (Multi-Fandom)

Description: You're between fandoms, and you want something where there will be new fic every day--let us match you with the large fandom you've been waiting for.

Title: Black Lightning (SIngle Fandom)

Description: Let's talk about Black Lightning--what it has to say in dialog with the rest of the DC tv-verse, and in thematic dialog with Black Panther and other Black-led superhero stories. (And, of course, about the awesome women.)

Title: But They Keep Not Running Away: Marvel's Runaways (Single Fandom)

Description: The Runaways is a great comic and now a fascinating live action show. The actors playing the kids are amazing, and even better are the adults! Let's talk about all the great cross-generational, cross-species, and incestuous slashy goodness. And why is it taking them so long to run away?

The following panels have one moderator already, so if you join them you can decide amongst yourselves whether anything should be updated. We'll put you in touch if you're not familiar with each other already.

Title: Zines and Archives (How-To)

Current mod: Melannen

Looking for: prefer to have a co-mod or two who was/is involved in slash fandom zine communities

Description:  Learn all about non-computer-based fanfic. What are zines and zine fandom like? How do you read them, learn about them, make them, own them, archive them?

Title: Good for a Laugh (Multi-Fandom)

Current mod: monkeypie

Looking for: anyone

Description: Smart sitcoms can combine sharp writing with great characters to deliver more than just a good joke. Current comedies like Brooklyn 99, One Day at a Time and the Good Place have all given us queer characters and addressed current issues of race, class and gender. Or maybe you're more interested in discussing which Golden Girl was the best? Let's talk about modern and classic sitcoms that have something more to say.

Title:  One-Shot Wonders (Multi-Fandom)

Current mod: KateKintail

Looking for: anyone

Description: Drowning in WIPS? Don't have time to read yet another novel-length fanfic? Come share your favorite one-shot recs! This is your opportunity to share that perfect one-shot you read once upon a time that will make everyone fall in love with your favorite fandom or pairing. Or maybe you've got a one-shot that's too wild or too hilarious to make it onto a normal rec list. Bring us your PWPs, your fluff, your crack pairings yearning to be read!

Title:  You Must Be At Least Four Centuries Old To Enter (Multi-Fandom)

Current mod: Melannen

Looking for: anyone

Description: The best fandoms are the old fandoms. The really old fandoms. From Shakespeare to Gilgamesh to the Sagas of the Icelanders, when will our OTPs finally get together? Which ancient text is slashiest? Which is the best adaptation of Journey to the West? Is it really best translated as the "The Discourse"? What is our favorite Julius Caesar joke? And will we finally solve, once and for all, the question of whether Achilles was a bottom?

Just added!
Title: Once More With Feeling (and Singing Along): The Buffy the Vampire Musical Singalong! (Single Fandom)
Current Mod: Cinco
Looking for: anyone, but would especially love help editing the video file before the con.
Description: In honor of BtVS's 20th anniversary, let's sing along to the musical episode (slightly trimmed for time) and roll around in all those feels. Buffy returns from the dead but is emotionally checked out! Giles decides to go back to England for reasons that were never particularly clear to your mod! Dancing vampires! Production numbers about dry cleaning! Buffy/Spike, before it all went wrong! Anya/Xander, before it all went wrong! Tara/Willow, in the midst of it all going terribly wrong! Captions provided, snark and cosplay welcomed.

Title: Ace Spectrum in Fandom Redux (Meta)
Current Mod: Neotoma
Looking for: anyone
Description: Let's talk about being ace in fandom--as a fan, and as a character. We'll talk about representation in our shows, inclusion in fannish spaces, and The Discourse--oh, The Discourse.

Title:
Fandom's Kitchen: Food & Fanworks (Meta)
Current Mod: Neotoma
Looking for: anyone
Description: Sometimes the feelings are on the plate. Sometimes the sandwich means I love you. A discussion of food in fandoms and fanworks, and recipes and food AS fanworks.

Title: Fairy Tales (and Where to Find the Good Ones)  (Multi-Fandom)

Current Mod: Beth

Looking for: anyone
Description: Fairy tales are an old-old fandom, and some of the modern retellings are pretty great. Perhaps it's the female leads that are kicking it up? Let's talk about which version of Red Riding Hood and Cinderella we love best, and why Evil Queens simply rule.

Title: How Slash Fandom Talks to Itself  (Meta)

Current Mod: Thalia

Looking for: anyone
Description: Fandom is all over the web, on a bunch of different social media sites with different norms and formats, and seems to still be seeking a perfect home. Where are we now? How do those places work, and how can people find fandom friends in them? What do we want in an online home for slash fandom?

Those of you who have been to CON.TXT before know about our slide show during Disco Duck with tons of pictures of our favorite characters, actors, and actresses. We're looking to add some new faces to our slideshow, and we want your help!

Please comment with links to up to FIVE large, high-quality images (they'll be projected onto a screen, so they need to look good when blown up!), and please give us whatever info you have on the person or people depicted (actor, character, and/or show). No fanart, please, but photos, screencaps, and official art are all welcome!

If you have a link to a good source for pictures, that would be helpful, too (and there's no limit on sources, send us as many as you have)!

We may not be able to use all of your submissions, but please consider helping us change things up with some new images!

And don't forget to go suggest three songs that make you want to dance!

For 2018, we will be dividing the proceeds of the Raffle equally between two charities, one national and one local to the DC area. They will be the Cancer Research Institute and the DC Center for the LGBT Community.

Raffle tickets will be $2 for 1, $10 for 6, or $20 for 13. They will be on sale at at the CON.TXT Registration Desk and from the mobile raffle site (i.e., Beth's backpack) from Thursday night (July 26th) until approximately 7:30 pm on Saturday (July 28th).

If you would like to donate prizes: All new, nearly new, or collectible items of a fannish or artsy nature will be gratefully received: DVDs/Blu-rays (all fandoms), books, toys, memorabilia, art, Hamilton tickets, etc. (No zines or videotapes, please.) If you're not coming to the con yourself, you can send items along with a friend, or ship them to the con. Leave a comment to this Dreamwidth post or email Beth at bethbethbeth [at] gmail [dot] com if you have something to contribute.

CON.TXT 2018: July 27-29 in Arlington, VA

CON.TXT, a media con for fans to gather and celebrate the joy of fandom, is seeking vids for our Vid Show! Nominate vids you love, new and old, or submit your own!

The vid show theme for 2018 is the joy of fandom: our ability to remix, reshape, and rewrite our favorite media into something that pleases us. We explore, transform, and reimagine new loves and old favorites. Give us vids that sell us on your new OTP, make us fall in love with a canon you adore, show us why your fave is the best, or reignite our passion for an older fandom. Comedy and drama are both welcome!

As in past years, we especially want to see vids with racial diversity in the characters they feature, vids from older or under-represented canons or for often-overlooked characters, and vids for non-U.S. or non-Western sources. Our roots as a slash con mean that we’re particularly interested in vids showing non-heteronormative relationships (slash, femslash, OT3, poly, relationships between one or more bisexual characters, etc), but we also welcome vids celebrating individual characters or gen vids that highlight a canon.

SUBMISSIONS AND NOMINATIONS

Vids you submit or nominate should fit into one of three tracks:

  • Premieres: Vids that have not been screened at another con and haven’t been available online for an audience.
  • New: Vids that have been shown at a con or posted for online viewing no earlier than June 15, 2016 (vid nominations deadline for the last CON.TXT).
  • Favorites: Vids that were shown at a con or posted for online viewing before June 15, 2016.

The vid committee will curate the vid show for flow, balance (of fandoms, pairings, musical artists, etcetera), and time. Priority will be given to premiering vids.

To nominate or submit a vid for inclusion in the show, head on over to our submissions form.

To give us time to curate and assemble the final show, the deadline for vid submissions/suggestions is June 15, 2018. All submissions for the New and Favorites tracks must be received by that date.

IF YOU'RE SUBMITTING A PREMIERE

If you need more time to finish your premiering vid, we still need your submission entered into the form by June 15, 2018. Please include a link to a preliminary draft (so we can get a sense of the vid’s subject, feel, music, etc.) and mark your submission [draft] in the title. We’ll contact you for the final version, which must be received no later than July 1.

ABOUT THE VID SHOW ENVIRONMENT

The vid show traditionally runs around 90 minutes to two hours in length, with a 20-minute intermission in the middle for people to get up, stretch, move around, or get a drink.

The vid show will be held in darkened ballroom space, projected onto a screen. It will run off a laptop connected to a projector. The ballroom doesn’t get too rowdy and singing along is frowned upon, although chair dancing does happen -- and it’s definitely not silent.

If you prefer to watch a vid show in a quieter space, we will have USB drives with the vid show available for checkout at the Registration Desk for viewing in your own room or in the con's upstairs suite (UpSuite).

We will provide a separate handout of content advisory notes for vids that contain material on our content advisory list. Our content advisory list is: blood/gore, canon-typical violence, canonical character death, abusive relationships, consent issues, sexual assault, underage sexual relations, Holocaust imagery, homophobia, incest, institutionalization, self-harm, suicide, torture, transphobia, violent religious imagery, misogynist lyrics, strobing lights/bright flashes, very quick cuts, and sudden volume changes.

In lieu of captioning, we’ll have an online list of lyrics that you can follow along with.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

If you are submitting your own vid, please take the following into account.

Vids should be formatted in 16:9 aspect ratio and encoded in MPEG4. As vids will be airing off a laptop, frame rate is less of an issue. Vids will be displayed at 1920x1080 resolution; the closer you can get to that resolution in the file you submit to us, the better it will look when screened. We’ll adjust the volume of all vids to be in line with each other.

To submit a vid, upload it somewhere on the internet (Dropbox is fine) and give us the link. If your vid is intended as a Premiere, please don’t share the link with anyone but us!

If you edit your song’s lyrics or include dialog in your vid, we’d really appreciate it if you could provide us notes on your edits so that we can include them in the lyrics masterpost for viewers who prefer to follow along with the lyrics while watching the vid show.

QUESTIONS?

If we’ve left anything out, or if you’d like to know more about the con or the vid show, please ask! You can reach us at: vids@con-txt.net.

We are really happy to be returning to the Residence Inn Arlington Pentagon City this summer.  Here are a few reasons why:

Service. The staff is really friendly and helpful, and took care of us really well in 2016.

Nosh. So much tasty!  There is a
complimentary full/hot American breakfast everyone staying in the hotel. If you're not staying in the hotel, you can buy a ticket for $10 (though enforcement of hotel guests seemed very lax before). Being in a Residence Inn, also means a killer combo of kitchens and groceries! Every room has a kitchen with a stove and a full-size fridge. AND - one block away is a signature Whole Foods Market, with:

  • A full-service grocery store with fresh produce, bakery, beer and wine, deli, and self-serve mochi (ice cream)
  • Hot bar and organic salad bar, plus made-to-order ramen, fresh sushi and artisan pizza
  • The Basin, an 82-seat barroom, featuring a seafood menu, local wine, beer, spirits and signature cocktails
  • Smoothie and coffee bar featuring draft kombucha and nitro cold brew
  • If Whole Foods is not your jam, there is also a Costco and a Harris Teeter just a few blocks away. This means you can eat hearty and healthy on a budget; you can invite folks to your room for a snack or meal or room party; the breakfast area has lots of tables available for shared lunches or dinners, too. Many restaurants in the area will deliver, too!

Transportation. The hotel has location, location, location. It's 0.3 miles from the Pentagon City Metro Station (a 6-minute walk).  It's two metro stops from Reagan National Airport (DCA), and two stops from downtown DC (just across the river). The hotel also offers a shuttle that will take you anywhere within a 1 mile radius, and it's complimentary to/from DCA Airport from 5 am to midnight. If you’re coming by car, the hotel is just off of Interstate 395

Shopping. A huge shopping/eating/services complex is at Pentagon City Metro Station, with the Fashion Centre (indoor) Mall and Pentagon Row (outdoor) Mall.

Amenities: Most importantly, there’s free wifi throughout the hotel. There's also a fitness center with cardio and free weights, and an indoor pool open from 10am-10pm on Saturday and Sunday, and from 5pm to 10pm on Friday. Pool panel, anyone?  And in every room, there is HD TV, free in-room coffee and tea service, kitchen and fridge, and a nice sitting area so no one has to sit on your bed. It's kind of the perfect con hotel :)

Reservations:  We have a special CON.TXT rate, and it is guaranteed only until the beginning of July-- $139 (plus tax) for a king studio; $159 (plus tax) for a queen/queen studio or a two-bedroom suite. (All rooms have a sofabed in addition to the specified beds.) Reserve early to ensure you get the type of room you want! There are two handy ways to book your hotel room.
  • Call 800-331-3131 and reference the CON.TXT Women in Media Event at the Residence Inn Pentagon City to make a reservations at the group rate.
  • To book online, click on this direct link: CON.TXT Women in Media Event.
Note: If you book online and attempt to make your reservation to check in prior to 7/26/18 or stay beyond 7/30/18, the system will respond that there are no rooms available. Also, if you are booking a room for two or more people, you will need to call the hotel after booking the room to add the additional names to the registration. (If you are planning to check in together, you are not required to add the names ahead of time; this is mostly useful for people who will be checking in separately.)

What's the Fan Fair?

Fan Fair is where you can buy cool fannish swag at CON.TXT! It’s a 3-hour event on Saturday afternoon where con attendees can shop for art, handmade geeky goods, and other fannish items from outside vendors or fellow con members.

We know many CON.TXT attendees make incredibly cool things but don’t want to spend the whole weekend sitting behind a vendor table.

Sounds great! What if I want to sell cool fannish swag at CON.TXT?

It’s easy! You can sign up for a table at the Fan Fair, and sell your items to your fellow con-goers yourself. A half table costs $10 for con members (including day members) and $20 for non-members; for a full table, simply purchase two half tables.

If you don’t want your own table at the Fan Fair--or if you’re not attending the con--you can also sell your items via the Orphan Table, which will be staffed by con volunteers. Twenty percent of sales will support the con, with the rest going to you. (No items priced under $5, please.)

Why not have dealers all weekend, like most cons do?

We wanted to structure things so that vendors could have a chance to sell and still attend panels. With the Fan Fair, more of you will have a chance to share the things you make with your fellow attendees--without missing the rest of the stuff you come to CON.TXT for.

Awesome, I can finally share my hand-embroidered Star Trek quote wall hangings with the world! Uh, that’s something you guys would want for the marketplace, right?

Absolutely! We welcome a wide range of handmade and collectable new and used goods. If you make fanart, jewelry, fiber crafts, wearable items, zines, or other things with geek appeal, we’d love to have you. We’re also interested in vintage zines, action figures, and other kinds of memorabilia. If you’re not sure whether your goods are right for the Fan Fair, check in with us at dealers@con-txt.net before signing up, and we’ll let you know if the things you want to bring haven’t been big sellers in the past.

Hmmm. I do enjoy making decoupaged light switch plates out of old comic books, but I’m not sure I have enough of them to fill a whole table.

No problem! You can reserve a table or a half-table for yourself, or split one with a friend (or friends!). If you’ve only got enough light switch plates for a quarter-table, that’s fine-- just join forces with your friend who crochets amigurumi versions of the Justice League.

I’m not attending CON.TXT, but I did make this really great oil painting of Paul Gross wrestling a bear. Is there a way I can still try to sell it?

Sounds like you’re a great candidate for the Orphan Table! You’ll need to ship your items before the con, or send them with a friend that’s attending. Contact us at dealers@con-txt.net to arrange shipping (including sending back anything that doesn’t sell). Please make sure everything you’d like us to sell for you is labeled with a price ($5 minimum) and your name, so we can keep track of what you sell.

Hey, maybe this means I can finally find a home for the six boxes of Dragonlance paperbacks in my garage! You guys want those, right?

...Probably not, no. Not all pre-owned items are likely to be good sellers, and we don’t want you to have to haul them all the way to the con and back for nothing. If you’re interested in bringing a lot of used items or anything bulky or heavy, please contact us at dealers@con-txt.net before you sign up and we’ll let you know if they’re a good fit for the con.

I want to sell at the Fan Fair, but I can’t attend the whole weekend. Can I just come for a day?

Yes! You can buy a half table for $20 (or purchase two half tables for a full one) and just come for the Fan Fair.

How do I sign up for all of these very exciting options?

Simply purchase a half table or two through Eventbrite, and if you have questions, you can contact us any time at dealers@con-txt.net.
