This is our last post before the con! If you were registered as of earlier this evening, you should have received an email with information about the con as well as an invite to our Discord server. If you haven't received this email, check your spam folder or the email address you are registered under. If you think you should have received an email and can't find it, please email us at info@contxt.club with your badge name and registration email address.

If you aren't registered yet, registration for CON.TXT is still open and will be through noon tomorrow Eastern Daylight Time, Friday, June 25 (what time is that for me?). You can register for the con on Conline. The second round of Discord invites will go out tomorrow after registration closes.

We have a lot of fun events and fantastic programming planned, plus a vid show with over an hour of premiering vids! So if you're still on the fence, check out our lineup for entertainment tomorrow night and the full con schedule! We hope to see you there!

There are just 9 days left until CON.TXT!

We have Friday evening events on June 25, and our main programming runs from the morning of Saturday, June 26, through Sunday, June 27 (Eastern daylight time).

We'll send more information to attendees next Thursday, including invitations to our Discord, but here are some things you can do before then:

We want to tell you more about the pre-con events that we have planned for Friday, June 25th! See the full schedule on our website.

Some activities listed below are team-based. We suggest signing up for them on Conline so that we can sort you into teams ahead of time; however, you'll still be able to participate even if you don't pre-register for the activity.

To sign up, find the activity on the schedule (they have a little banner that says "PRE-REG" in the top right corner), open it, answer any questions, and click "I'll be there!"

You will need to be registered to sign up. Registration is still open and will be through noon EDT June 25th, and the first activity, the scavenger hunt, will start an hour after that. Learn more about registration.

SCAVENGER HUNT

We're kicking off the con with a scavenger hunt across the wilds of the AO3! You will be given a list of things to find and an entire AO3 to look for them.

To sign up, pre-register in Conline by noon Eastern Daylight time (EDT) on Friday, June 25 (what time is that for me?). We'll sort everyone who signs up into a team and release the clues starting at 1:00 PM EDT. If you want to join in after registration closes, just let us know.

You and your team can work on the hunt through Saturday night, when answers are due at 11:59 PM EDT.

Winners will be announced at the wrap-up panel on Sunday.

FAN BINGO

Who here has a fannish tattoo? Who’s published a novel? Who’s seen the Star Wars Holiday Special? Come get to know your fellow fans with this bingo game—or just hang out and chat.

Fan bingo will be hosted in our Discord voice channels.

SMALL FANDOM SPEED DATING

The popular game show returns! Players with small fandoms to promote answer questions from players looking for a new fannish interest.

This will be a moderated game played in Zoom. If you haven't encountered Small Fandom Speed Dating before, it's basically The Dating Game with small fandoms instead of bachelors. You get to drag people into your small fandoms or find the new small fandom of your heart! It's great.

This activity has an optional pre-registration (you can attend and even participate without pre-registering). Preregistering will let us gauge the level of interest, though, so we encourage you to do so!

FISHBOWL

A fannish version of the popular game! Fishbowl combines rounds of Taboo, Charades, and Password.

CODENAMES

A fannish version of Codenames, a word-association game!

We are offering seven DIY panel slots this year! Read on if you’re interested in signing up.

There are four DIY panel slots on Saturday, June 26 (10 am, 11 am, 3:30 pm, and 5:30 pm Eastern Daylight Time) and three on Sunday, June 27 (9 am, 11 am, and 2 pm EDT). (What time is that for me?)

DIY panel slots can be claimed on a first come, first served basis at 8am EDT each day—you’re limited to claiming one timeslot per day. Once a member of the CON.TXT Concom opens the DIY panel signup in the #channel-requests channel in the Discord server, you’re welcome to claim a slot for that day (Discord server invites will be sent out once CON.TXT registration closes at noon EDT on Friday, June 25). Once we’ve indicated our acceptance in the Discord channel, you will need to provide the following information:
  • a title and description for your panel
  • names of the person(s) who will be moderating the panel
  • the name of the person who will take on the responsibility to serve as the Zoom tech moderator.

Please note: DIY panels will not be moderated by CON.TXT volunteers.

The Concom will create a new DIY panel channel in the Discord server, open the Zoom track ten minutes prior to the panel start, and transfer Zoom hosting responsibilities to the indicated tech moderator. A Concom member will resume Zoom hosting responsibilities once each DIY panel ends.

We urge anyone interested in claiming a DIY slot to review the CON.TXT Code of Conduct and watch the panel moderator training (reference slides) to adequately prepare ahead of time to moderate a DIY or any other panel.

If you have any questions, email panels@contxt.club or comment here.

We're excited to announce that the schedule of panels and activities for CON.TXT 2021 is available on Conline! Note that you won't be able to see details unless you're registered. You can also see the schedule as a Google Sheets spreadsheet and as a list on our website.

Thank you to all our fantastic panel mods; we wouldn't be able to run this con without you.

Panel titles and descriptions may undergo minor changes, but the times and panels themselves are final. UPDATE: There has been a small change to the panel schedule, with Show Us Your Kitties! moving to Saturday, 1:00 PM EDT instead of 10:00 AM EDT.

If your panel didn't make it in, we'll have DIY slots available throughout the weekend. You'll also be able to organize informal panels in the CON.TXT Discord server.

As a reminder, you need to register on Conline in order to attend the con. Learn more about registration. Moreover, if you're a panel mod but have not signed up on Conline, your name won't be listed on your panels until you have done so. Registration is still open and will be through noon EDT June 25th, so sign up if you're mulling it over!

We've been so happy to see so many people experience virtual CON.TXT who normally wouldn't be able to attend the con! We want to ensure that CON.TXT is a welcoming space for everyone. To that end, we have some guidelines for moderators as they create programming for the con.

PLANNING

  • Provide materials ahead of time. If you have slides or a document you'll be reading from, post it in your panel's Discord channel before your panel starts and ask @ConCom to pin it for you.
  • Provide captions or transcripts for pre-recorded audio. Vids should have lyric captions if possible (required for premiering vids). Other audio should have either captions or a transcript.
  • Use appropriate Content Notes. Vid shows are expected to follow our Content Notes Policy. Panelists are encouraged to send any content notes for their panel to panels@contxt.club so we can add them to the panel description.

CREATING SLIDES

  • Explain acronyms and terms. Consider starting off with a brief definition of your terms.
  • Make text big enough to read. A good guideline is to use a font size of 18 or larger for body text.
  • Use an easy-to-read font. Calibri and Arial may be plain, but they're easy to read! Avoid fonts that are ornate or very thin for the body of your slides.
  • Use high contrast colors. You should use either a light font on a dark background or a dark font on a light background. You can use the WebAIM color contrast checker to see whether two colors are high enough contrast; aim for the AA rating for the body (normal) text.
  • Limit use of animations in your slides. Some animations can be distracting or make people ill.

PRESENTING

  • Use a microphone or headset and do your best to limit background noise. This makes it easier for people to hear and understand you.
  • Don't speak too fast. This will give people following the captions time to catch up, and will make it easier for everyone to follow along.
  • Cover all the information on your slides. If you have text on your slides, make sure you cover it. You don't need to read things out verbatim, but you should cover all the information verbally.
  • Give people time to process information. Short pauses between topics or pieces of information give everyone time to process.
  • Describe visuals like images and video.
  • Repeat questions from the chat before answering them.
  • Ask participants to mention their name or handle each time they speak.

CONTACT US

If you have any questions about these guidelines, or if you would like to inform us of an accessibility need before or during the convention, please contact safety@contxt.club.

There are a few planned panels that are looking for mods or additional co-mods. If you are interested in helping out with any of these, email panels@contxt.club ASAP (or by Saturday, May 22nd).

Panel title: Period Typical Homophobia (Meta)
Current mod: cuddyclothes
Description: Fandoms set In 19th & 20th C. England: How do you like your historical slash? Reflecting the dark realities of history or ignoring them or combining them? Fanfic in Sherlock Holmes, Jeeves and Wooster, Raffles, and other fandoms tackle these issues in many different ways. Let’s discuss queer literature of the time, fanfic tropes, AUs, and what needs historical slash fulfills in writers and readers.

Panel title: Putting the Trans in Transformative (Meta)
Current mod: Lanna
Description: AUs give us all the power. What do we do when we take our canon cis characters and make them trans? What changes do we make to them and to their lives when we do it? What comments are we making when we do it? How have trans AUs changed over the years?

Panel title: We Love to Hate the Ones We Love (Meta)
Current mod: queercore_curriculum
Description: From Pride and Prejudice to Harry/Draco, enemies-to-lovers is one of the greatest romance tropes of all time. Let's compare our favorite enemies-to-lovers ships and discuss why we find this trope so irresistible in fandom and beyond.

Panel title: The Trek Continues (Single fandom)
Current mod: none
Description: 55 years ago, a space adventure show popped onto the screen, and we’re still getting more from it. How do the new Star Trek shows, Discovery, Picard, and Lower Decks reflect the eras in which they were made, and how are they in dialogue with each other/other Star Trek media?

Panel title: Women of the Expanse: Naomi, Avasarala, Drummer, Bobbie, Clarissa (aka Peaches) (Single fandom)
Current mod: krytella
Description: The Expanse has brought us a group of complex, competent women of color, with interesting storylines and the agency to make decisions that move the plot. IN SPACE. Did I mention the F/F shipping potential is extremely high? Whether you’ve seen all five seasons or this has piqued your interest and you just want to learn more, come talk about the badass ladies of Earth, Mars, and the Belt. Discussion about men limited to the last 10 minutes of the panel.

PREMIERE SUBMISSIONS

Premiere drafts are due Sunday, May 30th (as long as it is May 30th anywhere in the world). A draft has an 80% complete timeline and a beginning, middle and end. Submit your draft vid by emailing a link to vids@contxt.club. The link can be to Gdrive, Dropbox, an unlisted YouTube or Vimeo video, your own website—whatever!

When you're ready, submit the final version of your premiere with this Google form (if you've already submitted your vid via email, no need to use the form!). You'll need a streaming link for your vid. Conline, our convention platform, requires streaming links without password protection. In order to keep premieres secret before the convention, please leave the video unlisted or use a throwaway or anonymous account. Final premieres are due Friday, June 11th (as long as it is June 11th anywhere in the world).

You may submit up to two premieres, but we can't promise to show both, so please indicate your first choice when filling out the form.

For more info on premieres, please see this post with all the details.

VID SHOW INFO AND REMINDERS

This year's vid show will be the evening of Saturday, June 26th, Eastern Daylight Time.

We’re back with another all-virtual CON.TXT, and (just like last year) we need volunteers to help out with Discord and Zoom!

We are looking for volunteers to help us with:

  • Monitoring channels (text-based, no voice channels) on the con's Discord server by reading everything posted to your assigned channels during your volunteer time slot and reporting code of conduct issues.

  • Hosting and monitoring panels on Zoom by assisting presenters with screen sharing, monitoring the Zoom chat, and reporting technical and code of conduct issues.

We will host several 1–2 hour optional training sessions for volunteers on how to use Discord and Zoom, so volunteers with little or no knowledge of these platforms (or with lots of knowledge and a low comfort level) are welcome!

Please note, all volunteers will be required to attend a 1-hour training session on volunteer responsibilities. Multiple times will be offered in the two weeks before the con.

If you’d like to volunteer, please fill out this survey by midnight Eastern Daylight Time (what time is that for me?) on Tuesday, June 8.

We received some very fair comments about "The 'Not in Cdrama Fandom' Support Group" panel in the voting survey. People were rightfully concerned by the focus on Chinese fandoms when the barriers mentioned applied to other, non-Chinese fandoms. That exclusionary focus was racist.

Our long-standing process has been to put panels up for voting as submitted and rework them if needed on the backend, after voting is complete. It's clear that this approach is insufficient.

We had flagged this panel internally and had no intention of putting it on the schedule without substantial revisions (e.g., as a panel about finding new fandoms generally), but we realize now that there was no way for anyone to know that. By including the panel on our survey, we implied that we saw no problems with it.

It was a huge oversight on our part to put this panel on our survey as it stood. We apologize deeply for that oversight and for contributing through our inaction to Sinophobia and racism.

We have removed the panel in question from our programming survey, and have revised our processes so that in the future we will address any concerning content in suggested programming before we share the survey.

Panel voting is now open! This is your chance to vote for the panels you'd like to see at CON.TXT 2021! You may vote for as many or as few panels as you like. Voting closes on Friday, May 7, 2021, at midnight Eastern Daylight Time.

Panels which were only suggested as prerecorded panels or minipanels are not included in this survey. If you suggested such a panel, we will follow up with you soon.

You can also choose which of the Open panels—panels in need of mods—you would like to volunteer to moderate, by ranking up to five of your top choices. (Don’t worry—we won’t assign you to five panels!)

If you suggested or volunteered to mod a panel in the panel proposal post and see it listed in the poll as an Open panel, please select it as one of your mod choices in the poll if you are still interested!

If you suggested a panel and made arrangements in the panel proposal post to co-mod it with another person, you will still see it listed as an Open panel unless you specifically edited or commented on your post to mark it as Closed. We will contact you to find out if you still need additional co-mods before we assign any more people.

We strive to offer a well-balanced and wide range of panel topics. The voting tells us which panels are the most popular, but it also helps us choose among similar panels and decide which suggestions might be better combined. We don't use a strict numbers cut-off to determine our programming.

We're looking forward to seeing you all (virtually) at CON.TXT 2021! Vote now for your preferred panels.

Please register here to join us for CON.TXT 2021 on June 26–27! You need to have a Conline account first, so sign up if you haven’t already (you will need a Google, Twitter, or Facebook account to sign up—we suggest creating a throwaway account if you do not want to link your existing social media). Then register for CON.TXT—the CON.TXT page will be updated with news and the con program once it’s available. If you have any questions about how to use Conline, you can reference the FAQ for con attendees.

Registration costs $20 including processing fees, payable using Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Scholarships are available for fans of color and anyone unable to afford the registration cost—please get in touch with us at registration@contxt.club to apply. You do not need to disclose any details of your personal circumstances in order to qualify. Scholarship application deadline is Friday, June 18, at midnight Eastern Daylight Time (what time is that for me?).

Don't worry if your membership shows as pending after you register! This is normal and your membership will be confirmed within 24 hours of payment.

CON.TXT is an 18+ con—by registering, you are confirming that you are or will be 18 years of age or older at the time of the con. Your registration also confirms that you agree to abide by our Code of Conduct.

Like last year, this year’s CON.TXT will take place entirely online, with the con schedule accessible on Conline, panels taking place over Zoom, and socializing on our Discord server. More details will be available as we get closer to the con.

Registration for CON.TXT 2021 closes at noon Eastern Daylight Time, on Friday, June 25th. Discord invites will go out that afternoon before the pre-con events start that evening.

Hi everyone! Your friendly vid show committee—alpheratz, cinco, corbae, and salvamisandwich—is looking for suggestions for CON.TXT's 2021 vid show! Tell us about the vids you love in new and old fandoms, and definitely tell us if you're thinking about submitting a premiere to the show! This year's vid show will be the evening of Saturday, June 26th (Eastern time)

VID NOMINATIONS AND PREMIERE SUBMISSIONS

To nominate a vid for inclusion in the show, head on over to our vid nomination form. Please don't be shy: self-nominate as much as you like! The deadline for vid nominations is May 30th, 2021, at 11:59 EDT.

If you're thinking of submitting a premiere, please fill out the premiere interest form. This does not commit you to anything! This poll will remain open through May 30th, 2021 as well, but note that the deadline to submit final premiere drafts is later. Read below for more details on submitting premieres.

PREMIERE GUIDELINES

We accept premieres for any fandom and with any type of content, but if it would be helpful to you to get a sense of the typical tone of CON.TXT vid shows, you can check out last year's playlist.

Drafts are due Sunday, May 30th, 2021 (as long as it is May 30th anywhere in the world). For this purpose, a draft is a vid with at least an 80% completed timeline and a beginning, middle, and end.

To submit your draft vid, email us a link at vids@contxt.club. The link can be to Gdrive, Dropbox, an unlisted YouTube or Vimeo video, your own website—whatever!

Final vids are due Friday, June 11th (as long as it is June 11th anywhere in the world). We can work with you if you want to make tweaks after that date, though—just email us.

Final vids should be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo as unlisted videos. They should not be password protected. This year, we are asking that you also submit subtitles alongside your premiere. Festivids has some great information on creating subtitles for your vid.

Submit the final version of your premiere with this Google form.

This year we will be using an updated content notes policy. We will add content notes to your vid according to our policy, but you are welcome to provide any additional notes you feel are appropriate.

QUESTIONS?

If we’ve left anything out, or if you’d like to know more about the con or the vid show, please ask! You can reach us at vids@contxt.club or comment on this post.

We are now taking panel suggestions for CON.TXT 2021! Please read this post and comment with your suggestions using the template below.

We are making several changes to the panel proposal process this year:

  1. Open versus Closed panels. This year, you will have a choice between submitting a panel proposal as Open or Closed. A Closed panel is a panel for which you are submitting the idea as well as the full lineup of mods. If the panel is accepted, the panels committee will not find you any additional co-mods.

An Open panel is a panel you are asking the panels committee to put together—you propose the idea, and we assemble a panel out of the potential mods who volunteer. Every mod selected will be able to opt in or out of the final panel, but no mod will have veto power over co-mod assignment.*

If you would like to have control over the mod lineup of the panel you are proposing to mod, we invite you to use the comments on this post to find co-mods and submit your panel as Closed. (Feel free to edit your proposal post if you fill up a panel before the deadline!)

(*Just to be clear—if we assign you to a panel with someone you do not trust to adhere to the Code of Conduct, please let us know! Our goal is to streamline the panel selection process and simplify communication with mods, not to force you to work with anyone you don’t feel safe around.)

  2. Prerecorded versus live content. While most panels will still be conducted live, we are offering two kinds of pre-recorded panels this year!

    1. Full-length prerecorded panels. What it says on the tin! This format is best-suited for How-to panels or other information-heavy panels involving a lot of screensharing, but we will consider proposals for prerecorded programming in all categories.

    2. Minipanels! We’re hoping to do at least one block of short (3–10 minute) prerecorded presentations—basically a big fannish knowledge party! This is a great place to pimp your fandom, share your favorite nifty facts, or rant about your pet peeve.

Prerecorded panels and minipanels will be reviewed by the concom for usability and content in violation of the code of conduct, but they won’t go through the voting process. If you would like to submit a prerecorded panel or minipanel, please comment here to let us know. Then, submit your video to the programming committee by May 25. (We’ll make another post soon letting you know how!)

Also—not a change from last year, but a thing you may not have known—you can suggest vid shows! If you would like to VJ a vid show panel—or you think someone else should—suggest it here!

All attendees and those considering attending are welcome to suggest panels, regardless of whether or not you want to moderate. Most full-length panels are 50 minutes long but we have had panels run for a longer duration, so please note if you think your panel suggestion needs more time.

If you have an idea for a panel but don’t want to moderate it, no problem—suggest it as an Open panel! If you see an Open panel suggestion and would like to moderate it, drop a comment and volunteer.

As you know, we had to cancel the 2021 in-person convention we had previously planned due to hotel availability. However, we're excited to announce that we will hold another virtual con next summer instead! That's CON.TXT two years in a row!

CON.TXT 2021 will be held online June 26-27, 2021, with pre-con events on the evening of June 25 (EDT).

We would usually poll you about con dates, and we're sorry for not doing so this year—we chose this weekend based on our schedules and other scheduled conventions. We hope this date will work for most of you!

Specifics, including details on registration, will be coming in early 2021, but we can share a few preliminary details with you now:
  • Based on your feedback, con panels and activities will be spread out over two days with more breaks throughout
  • There will be a registration fee, with scholarships available. We haven't finalized the price but it is unlikely to be more than $20
  • We're looking into offering some recorded panels (to allow for asynchronous viewing) and improved accessibility features (such as live captioning)
  • Platform decisions have not been finalized, but we expect the modes of interaction to be a mix of text and video/voice

We look forward to seeing you all again next summer! In the meantime, we'll keep you posted here and on Twitter. You can also join our mailing list to get updates.
