We are now taking panel suggestions for CON.TXT 2023! Please read this post and comment with your suggestions using the template below.
All attendees and those considering attending are welcome to suggest panels, regardless of whether or not you want to moderate them.
You may submit a panel suggestion as an open or closed panel.
A closed panel is a panel for which you are submitting the idea as well as the full lineup of mods. If the panel is accepted, the panels committee will not find you any additional co-mods. The lineup does not need to be final when you suggest the panel.
An open panel is a panel you are asking the panels committee to put together—you propose the idea, and we assemble a panel out of the potential mods who volunteer. Every mod selected will be able to opt in or out of the final panel, but no mod will have veto power over co-mod assignment. However, please contact us if you have any concerns about your assigned co-mods! Our goal is to streamline the panel selection process and simplify communication with mods, not to force you to work with anyone you don’t feel safe around.
If you would like to have control over the mod lineup of the panel you are proposing to mod, we invite you to use the comments on this post to find co-mods and submit your panel as closed.
If you have an idea for a panel but don’t want to moderate it, suggest it as an open panel. If you see an open panel suggestion and would like to moderate it, drop a comment and volunteer.
If you loved a panel suggestion from a previous year, please contact the person who suggested it or the previous mods if you want to submit the same description. Alternatively, you may write a new description. Panel descriptions may be edited or consolidated before voting at the Concom's discretion.
Save your vid show suggestions—we'll take them in an upcoming post!
Panel suggestions will remain open through March 6, 2023.

Mod(s): The badge name(s) of interested moderator(s)—please list your own badge name if you would like to moderate
Open or Closed: Use “Open” if you would like the panels committee to assign mods to this panel. Use “Closed” if the co-mods named are prepared to mod the panel on their own.
Category: Meta, Multi-fandom, Single Fandom, Activity, How-to
Description: This is a longer description of the panel, which will be included in the con program. This should be as specific as you can be in a paragraph!
Other notes: These notes will not be part of the final listing for the panel and will not appear in the con program, but can include things like technology requirements or general thoughts on panel content which you'd like to flesh out in further comments.
Most full-length panels are 50 minutes long but we have had panels run for a longer duration, so please note if you think your panel suggestion needs more time.
To propose a change or expansion to an already-suggested panel or to volunteer as an additional moderator for one, please reply to the suggestion and not to the main post so that each panel's discussion is threaded. Note that if two suggestions seem very similar we may merge them into one, so check what's already been proposed before suggesting a new panel. If a similar idea exists, comment to ask if the original suggester wants to work with your ideas.

Description: Dracula Daily has ushered in a whole wave of substack readalongs of classic literature--Les Miserables, Moby Dick, Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice, The Three Musketeers, the Divine Comedy, and probably others I don't know about. In some cases, the format is transformational; in others, it's a restoration of the way readers first encountered it.
So let's talk about serial readalongs! How they change the reading experience, for good or ill; how they change (or create) their fandoms, and why they're so popular--is it that we've all lost the ability to read a long novel on our own over the last few years? That we're all longing for the massive pop culture readalong that was Harry Potter? Or just that they're finally making us sit down and (re)read Moby Dick?

Let's also talk about fandom spaces and any unspoken NT rules we've sussed out for interaction. If there's time at the end, we'll discuss how many excellent OTPs have one autistic character and one with ADHD.

Superheroes, Quantum Leap, “undercover” episodes of spy/cop/agent shows, the switch in Good Omens, mirror AUs and bodyswap, polyjuice potion, the “everyone is Janet” ep of The Good Place… and that’s just the canon stuff! Let’s dive into good canons, fannish tropes/tags, and fanworks for identity play.
Title: But What About the Pigeon Poop? Worldbuilding

Description: Back in the LJ days, fanfic writers would sometimes provide a separate "DVD commentary" explaining their thought/writing process and providing extra details. This panel discusses how (and why) to create a DVD commentary.
Other notes: "A/N" stands for "author notes"; I have no idea why there's a slash in it.

CON.TXT Panel Submission
Date: 2023-03-07 03:48 am (UTC)Title: Archivers of the Lost Art
Mod(s): ViddersAdmin & MorganDawn
Category: Meta
Description: The phrase “the internet is forever” does not hold true when it comes to fan works. Imeem, YahooGroups, LJ, and dare we say, Twitter? Archiving is as relevant today as the next Indiana Jones movie coming out this year! This panel is a show and tell of the latest archiving projects that touch on AO3, You Tube, Twitter, Livejournal, as well as other new projects that are cataloging & honoring the rich cultural legacy of fan works. The value of our fandom nostalgia is as valuable as a Top Gun sequel in 2022. It's as valuable as any works you’d find in a traditional museum. Come learn more about the archiving of valuable fan art and how you can contribute to, and/or provide support for their relevancy in fandom's future. We'll showcase some exclusive content during this panel.
Other notes:
Title: Fandom Community Severance
Mod(s): ViddersAdmin & MorganDawn
Category: Meta
Description: Fandom Communities can either be run by corporations or fans. Sometimes corporate-run projects receive more support from fans, even though they don’t need it, and are frequently not fandom-friendly - severing connections in the process (twitter). Community projects created by fans cater to the unique needs of fans, but may not always receive the support they deserve. In some cases, this is due to a misunderstanding or being unfamiliar with how projects support fan’s needs. This panel will showcase some of the more interesting & novel fandom community projects you may have never heard about. Projects aimed at bringing community together that may also benefit from your support, financial or otherwise.

Category: Meta, and/or How-to
Description: More and more fandom activity in the last five years (including this convention) is happening on Discord. How is the move to Discord changing fandom, and what does it say about modern fandom? How do fans find and use Discord servers? Share resources and tips for fans looking to try out Discord or become more comfortable there.
Other notes: Could focus more about meta regarding the current fandom migrations, could focus more as a how-to on Discord for fans still finding their feet there or who don't really know how to dive in.
Title: Transformative Fandom and SF Fandom
Mod(s):
Open or Closed: Open
Category: Meta, Multi-fandom,
Description: Fanworks fandom - lately most well-known as the home of Hugo Award™ Winning Website AO3.org, and Science Fiction Fandom - lately most well-known as the home of the Hugo Awards™ - have always been close kin, although sometimes uncomfortably so. Many professional SF and fantasy fans have gotten their start as fanfic writers, and many fanfic writers have gotten their start in SF fandom. Let's discuss the history of the kinship and crossover and gradient between the two fandom communities, where it's going and where it's been and how we move between them.
Other notes:
Title: Video Blogging RPF
Mod(s):
Open or Closed: Open
Category: Meta, Multi-fandom, Single Fandom
Description: Over the past few years, Video Blogging RPF has been by far the largest category of RPF on AO3 - including everything from elaborate virtual-world roleplay universes to people who simply go on camera to talk about their lives. RPF about "online content creators" presents new challenges about interaction between creators and fandom, since direct interaction with fandom is often a large part of the creators' work. What's going on in content creators' fandoms, how are they different and the same as other RPF, and how to creators and fans navigate the challenges?
Other notes: This might make a good merge with Hannah's proposal but I think there's enough just about the video blogging fandoms to more than take over a panel. (I can do Minecraft streamers but I am only vaguely aware of things like Phandom and Markiplier, and we could probably also include things like Critical Role which AO3 doesn't file under Video Blogging but definitely fall into the same type of fandom as the Minecraft fandoms that do. So maybe it should have a broader name. Or we can discuss how badly AO3 tag categories handle this kind of fandom….
Title: Star Trek: TOS
Mod(s):
Open or Closed: Open
Category: Single Fandom
Description: Star Trek: TOS fandom is still alive, let's talk about the originals and what they're up to these days.
Other notes:
Title: What To Do With An Old WIP
Mod(s):
Open or Closed: Open
Category: Meta, Multi-fandom, How-to
Description: Sometimes you start a fanwork and you never quite finish it and you never quite quit it either, and next thing you know it's been a year, or two years, or ten years, and your WIP is still around even if your fandom isn't and half the current fans were in elementary school when you started it and you aren't the same person anymore, either. What's to be done with an old WIP? (Finish it???)

Description: This seventeen-year-old movie continues to inspire Sapphic writing with an active AO3 presence, a lively discord and several published "Ice Queen" Sapphic romances that began as DWP fanfic. But what does the movie say about the changing opportunities for women in our society? Why does it remain meaningful 17 years later? Is Miranda just a female take on the emotionally unavailable bad boy executive, or is there more to it than that? We'll talk about all that and have some fic recs available, from the sweet to the smutty.

Description: What do words mean, anyway? Whether it's a canon that uses specific terms that don't exist in the language you're writing in, or it's worldbuilding you've made yourself, when do we use exposition, when do we use author's notes, and when do we just leave it untranslated? How do we make these choices and when?
Other notes: I may or may not be able to comod this, but I think this panel would have a lot of relevance in cdrama and cnovel fandoms, so it would be good to have mods who are involved in those.
