CON.TXT 2018: July 27-29 in Arlington, VA

CON.TXT, a media con for fans to gather and celebrate the joy of fandom, is seeking vids for our Vid Show! Nominate vids you love, new and old, or submit your own!

The vid show theme for 2018 is the joy of fandom: our ability to remix, reshape, and rewrite our favorite media into something that pleases us. We explore, transform, and reimagine new loves and old favorites. Give us vids that sell us on your new OTP, make us fall in love with a canon you adore, show us why your fave is the best, or reignite our passion for an older fandom. Comedy and drama are both welcome!

As in past years, we especially want to see vids with racial diversity in the characters they feature, vids from older or under-represented canons or for often-overlooked characters, and vids for non-U.S. or non-Western sources. Our roots as a slash con mean that we’re particularly interested in vids showing non-heteronormative relationships (slash, femslash, OT3, poly, relationships between one or more bisexual characters, etc), but we also welcome vids celebrating individual characters or gen vids that highlight a canon.

SUBMISSIONS AND NOMINATIONS

Vids you submit or nominate should fit into one of three tracks:

  • Premieres: Vids that have not been screened at another con and haven’t been available online for an audience.
  • New: Vids that have been shown at a con or posted for online viewing no earlier than June 15, 2016 (vid nominations deadline for the last CON.TXT).
  • Favorites: Vids that were shown at a con or posted for online viewing before June 15, 2016.

The vid committee will curate the vid show for flow, balance (of fandoms, pairings, musical artists, etcetera), and time. Priority will be given to premiering vids.

To nominate or submit a vid for inclusion in the show, head on over to our submissions form.

To give us time to curate and assemble the final show, the deadline for vid submissions/suggestions is June 15, 2018. All submissions for the New and Favorites tracks must be received by that date.

IF YOU'RE SUBMITTING A PREMIERE

If you need more time to finish your premiering vid, we still need your submission entered into the form by June 15, 2018. Please include a link to a preliminary draft (so we can get a sense of the vid’s subject, feel, music, etc.) and mark your submission [draft] in the title. We’ll contact you for the final version, which must be received no later than July 1.

ABOUT THE VID SHOW ENVIRONMENT

The vid show traditionally runs around 90 minutes to two hours in length, with a 20-minute intermission in the middle for people to get up, stretch, move around, or get a drink.

The vid show will be held in darkened ballroom space, projected onto a screen. It will run off a laptop connected to a projector. The ballroom doesn’t get too rowdy and singing along is frowned upon, although chair dancing does happen -- and it’s definitely not silent.

If you prefer to watch a vid show in a quieter space, we will have USB drives with the vid show available for checkout at the Registration Desk for viewing in your own room or in the con's upstairs suite (UpSuite).

We will provide a separate handout of content advisory notes for vids that contain material on our content advisory list. Our content advisory list is: blood/gore, canon-typical violence, canonical character death, abusive relationships, consent issues, sexual assault, underage sexual relations, Holocaust imagery, homophobia, incest, institutionalization, self-harm, suicide, torture, transphobia, violent religious imagery, misogynist lyrics, strobing lights/bright flashes, very quick cuts, and sudden volume changes.

In lieu of captioning, we’ll have an online list of lyrics that you can follow along with.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

If you are submitting your own vid, please take the following into account.

Vids should be formatted in 16:9 aspect ratio and encoded in MPEG4. As vids will be airing off a laptop, frame rate is less of an issue. Vids will be displayed at 1920x1080 resolution; the closer you can get to that resolution in the file you submit to us, the better it will look when screened. We’ll adjust the volume of all vids to be in line with each other.

To submit a vid, upload it somewhere on the internet (Dropbox is fine) and give us the link. If your vid is intended as a Premiere, please don’t share the link with anyone but us!

If you edit your song’s lyrics or include dialog in your vid, we’d really appreciate it if you could provide us notes on your edits so that we can include them in the lyrics masterpost for viewers who prefer to follow along with the lyrics while watching the vid show.
