(Just some general notes from the AUs panel -- thank you to cjandre for taking notes, as I fail at it.)
Characters can be better outside of canon
Some characters are more portable than others.
When do you lose the character in the AU? Losing nationality can destroy the characterization. However sometimes you can find emotional equivalency. This must be consistent through the AU.
One reason to write AU is explore the character outside of their canon setting. Sometimes this give free rein for exploration.
AUs are fun to write, but why do people read them?
- "It is mainline to my kink" - "An AU shows what the writer considers essential about the characters" - "AUs provide a great 'what if' moment in fanfic writing" - "As a reader there is the joy of wow that is unusual - and why didn't I think of that. It is so obvious now!" - "There is also the fun of taking something away from a character, and seeing what are they going to do, what are they like?" -"It's fun to read an AU and take the world apart and analyze whether it worked. What does the author do to take me to this world?"
"Take your fandom to work day" - this should be a CHALLENGE! (It looks like celli is taking this one on!)
The research can be intimidating, but it can also be fun.
World construction is also important.
This doesn't always mean you have to include it.
SGA is a great a AU fandom. Fandoms like Mag7 are also big on AU because people don't want to deal with the historical research.
- "It seems like fandoms have a 'tone' and I like to hear that tone in the AU."
- "Sometimes people like the characters but don't like the worlds."
- "Fusion is way cool. deciding what elements to keep and what to kill, and what 'easter egg' events are kept around for the readers to find."
- "It is also really good if you have characters are so entrenched in their worlds then it is fun to go out. Sometimes one also just wants to try soemthing out that hasn't been done before when you have a show with a really deep canon."
- "It is also fun to take ideas from the same actors in new projects and bring them back into your original fandom."
