Panel suggestions are open!

We are now taking panel suggestions for CON.TXT 2021! Please read this post and comment with your suggestions using the template below.

We are making several changes to the panel proposal process this year:

  1. Open versus Closed panels. This year, you will have a choice between submitting a panel proposal as Open or Closed. A Closed panel is a panel for which you are submitting the idea as well as the full lineup of mods. If the panel is accepted, the panels committee will not find you any additional co-mods.

An Open panel is a panel you are asking the panels committee to put together—you propose the idea, and we assemble a panel out of the potential mods who volunteer. Every mod selected will be able to opt in or out of the final panel, but no mod will have veto power over co-mod assignment.*

If you would like to have control over the mod lineup of the panel you are proposing to mod, we invite you to use the comments on this post to find co-mods and submit your panel as Closed. (Feel free to edit your proposal post if you fill up a panel before the deadline!)

(*Just to be clear—if we assign you to a panel with someone you do not trust to adhere to the Code of Conduct, please let us know! Our goal is to streamline the panel selection process and simplify communication with mods, not to force you to work with anyone you don’t feel safe around.)

  2. Prerecorded versus live content. While most panels will still be conducted live, we are offering two kinds of pre-recorded panels this year!

    1. Full-length prerecorded panels. What it says on the tin! This format is best-suited for How-to panels or other information-heavy panels involving a lot of screensharing, but we will consider proposals for prerecorded programming in all categories.

    2. Minipanels! We’re hoping to do at least one block of short (3–10 minute) prerecorded presentations—basically a big fannish knowledge party! This is a great place to pimp your fandom, share your favorite nifty facts, or rant about your pet peeve.

Prerecorded panels and minipanels will be reviewed by the concom for usability and content in violation of the code of conduct, but they won’t go through the voting process. If you would like to submit a prerecorded panel or minipanel, please comment here to let us know. Then, submit your video to the programming committee by May 25. (We’ll make another post soon letting you know how!)

Also—not a change from last year, but a thing you may not have known—you can suggest vid shows! If you would like to VJ a vid show panel—or you think someone else should—suggest it here!

All attendees and those considering attending are welcome to suggest panels, regardless of whether or not you want to moderate. Most full-length panels are 50 minutes long but we have had panels run for a longer duration, so please note if you think your panel suggestion needs more time.

If you have an idea for a panel but don’t want to moderate it, no problem—suggest it as an Open panel! If you see an Open panel suggestion and would like to moderate it, drop a comment and volunteer.

FAQ:
Q: What is a CON.TXT panel?
A: CON.TXT panels are typically discussions among all attendees, led by one or more moderators who have prepared a discussion outline. Some panels include a lengthier presentation by the moderator, and some are activity, workshop, or game panels. Most panels are 50 minutes long, but some are longer. This year, we are also scheduling blocks of 3–10 minute prerecorded minipanels.

Q: What is a good CON.TXT panel suggestion?
A: You want a catchy, yet informative title and a two- to four-sentence description that raises specific questions. Warn for spoilers if your panel will include them. Use a fannish in-joke or two! Say up front if the purpose of the panel is to attract newbies or to hold a detailed dissection of book eighteen in the series.

Q: Are you taking all suggestions?
A: We'll put all suggestions up for a vote by our attendees, and as many as possible will be scheduled. If your panel doesn't get in, you will have a chance to sign up for a DIY panel slot during the con.

Q: Won't voting eliminate smaller fandom panels?
A: We make sure to offer a wide range of panel topics, and the vote helps us choose among similar panels or decide which suggestions should be combined. It's not a strict numbers cut-off.

Q: What if someone else has already suggested something that I was going to suggest?
A: Panels can have more than one moderator. If they’ve suggested it as an Open panel, comment on their suggestion and offer to co-mod! If we receive panel suggestions that are substantially similar, we may reach out about combining the two ideas.

Q: How many panels can I suggest?
A: As many as you like! We won't schedule you to moderate more than three of them, though, so if they all make it through the voting process we'd appreciate your help in suggesting alternate moderators to take over your panel ideas.

Q: What if my friend wants to moderate this panel I'm suggesting?
A: That's fine; you can put your friend's name in as moderator and we'll consider it to be their suggestion. Please don't put people's names in without making sure they're willing!

Q: What if I suggest a panel now and then change my mind later on?
A: We'll check in with all potential moderators after voting to make sure you're still enthusiastic about the topic.

Q: Do I have to have a co-mod?
A: For this virtual con, you do at least need to have a tech mod—it’s just too much to ask one person to lead the whole discussion and manage muting and unmuting and chat on their own. However, if you’re sure you don’t want help leading discussion or presenting, you can submit a Closed panel of just yourself, and we will only assign a volunteer to help out as tech mod.

Q: How do I pick a category?
A: A Meta panel is one with a topic that's not tied to any particular fandom, although certain fandoms may be discussed or used as examples. A Multifandom panel has a topic that's common across several specific fandoms. A Single Fandom panel goes into depth in a particular fandom. An Activity panel can be something like a podfic recording session or a game of Pictionary. A How-to panel teaches attendees how to do something.

To propose a panel for CON.TXT 2021, please comment on this post with the following information:

Title: A Short Yet Interesting Title
Mod(s): The badge name(s) of interested moderator(s)—please list your own badge name if you would like to moderate
Open or Closed: Use “Open” if you would like the panels committee to assign mods to this panel. Use “Closed” if the co-mods named are prepared to mod the panel on their own.
Type: Full-length live panel, full-length prerecorded panel, 5-minute minipanel, or vid show.
Category: Meta, Multi-fandom, Single Fandom, Activity, How-to
Description: This is a longer description of the panel, which will be included in the con program. This should be as specific as you can be in a paragraph!
Other notes: These notes will not be part of the final listing for the panel and will not appear in the con program, but can include things like technology requirements or general thoughts on panel content which you'd like to flesh out in further comments.

To propose a change or expansion to an already-suggested panel or to volunteer as an additional moderator for one, please reply to the suggestion and not to the main post so that each panel's discussion is threaded. Note that if two suggestions seem very similar we may merge them into one, so check what's already been proposed before suggesting a new panel. If a similar idea exists, comment to ask if the original suggester wants to work with your ideas.

An example from 2018:

Title: Werewolf Torts and Undead Annuities 201
Mod(s): v_greyson & maralenenok
Category: Meta
Description: Do zombies get life annuities? Does a lawyer with a demonic possession have a conflict of interest? We’re back for Volume 2 of supernatural legal and actuarial hypotheticals! No prerequisites or required reading, just bring your questions about vampire life insurance and whether entering the fairy ring in the forest is actually a legally binding contract.
Other notes: We will not be providing legal, financial, or any other kind of advice.

Feel free to brainstorm away in the comments section!

1) in the Timeline, at: Beginning of June: CON.TXT 2020 programming schedule posted on our website and,
2) after the Q&A at: To propose a panel for CON.TXT 2020, please comment on this post with the following information:)

Mod(s): everyfragment & v_greyson

Open or Closed: Closed

Type: Full-length live panel

Category: Single Fandom

Description: The rich and powerful take what they want.  Leverage is a show about the people who steal it back for you.  We’ll start with an introduction for new fans, talk about our favorite heists and moments, and get excited for Leverage 2.0.  If you like found family, humiliating greedy corporations, wiping the floor with corrupt politicians, or designing brewpub menus, this is for you.  Let’s go steal a panel!

Title: Show Us Your Kitties

Mod(s): TBD

Open or Closed: Open

Type: Full-length live panel

Category: Activity

Description: After many months of quarantine, we can all agree that the best part of any Zoom meeting is a pet making a guest star appearance.  Let’s go around and show off our cute pets (or human children, if they want to say hi) or something neat in our homes that doesn’t normally appear on camera, like new art prints or a possibly haunted statue that you bought from an online thrift store (not that this has happened to me, or anything).

Title: Women of The Expanse

Mod(s): TBD

Open or Closed: Open

Type: Full-length live panel

Category: Single Fandom

Other notes: I could co-mod this one, depending on what else gets in!

Category: single fandom - From Eroica with Love
Description: How many fandoms do you know where the canon is more crack than the crackest fanfiction? Come see various characters steal the Pope, race tanks at high speed on the highway, hide secret microfilms in underwear, dumpster dive for rotten bananas, be a fashion expert’s wet dream and worst nightmare at the same time, climb walls on high heels and backwards, and fight in the Cold War while looking drop dead gorgeous! This mini-panel showcases the manga From Eroica With Love and its time-honoured fandom.
Other notes: With sexy illos!

Category: single fandom - From Eroica with Love
Description: Old Eroica fan? New Eroica fan? Just watched the Eroica mini-panel five minutes ago and are intrigued? Come and take part in serious discussions about silly clothes, politically incorrect politics, uncharacteristic characterisations, weird fanons from a weirder canon. Let’s hear it for a long-lived fandom spanning from tipp-ex and ditto machine scanlations to Zoom meets and Discord watch-alongs. Vintage is in!
Other notes: We recommend participants watch the pre-recorded minipanel “Eroica: Not Just for Beethoven Fans”

Title: Murderbot Just Wants To Watch Shows: Fans and Fandom in Recent Media

Mod(s): (please not me I’m exhausted)

Open or Closed: Open

Type: Full-length live panel

Category: Multi-fandom

Description: Murderbot just wants to sit quietly and watch space dramas, but Adventures and Feelings keep getting in the way. Ms Marvel has to deal with the awkwardness of teaming up with Wolverine after having written fic about him on the internet. How do we see ourselves as fans portrayed in the media we consume these days, and how has it changed? As more folks who came up in Internet Fandom themselves become published creators, how does it affect how we interact with the media?

Title: Pilots, Why? (AKA the Zoom about Zooms)

Mod(s): someone? anyone?

Open or Closed: Open

Type: Full-length live panel?

Category: Multi-fandom? Meta? Not sure.

Description: Planes, spacecraft, giant robots, and the (frequently hot) people who pilot them – what about pilots makes them so compelling, and why do we keep coming back to this theme? What new media have taken flight recently or launching soon? What are some old classics newer folks who like this subject might want to check out?

[personal profile] coyotegestalt 2021-04-18 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
(I feel bad nomming panels but not volunteering to mod, but my summer currently looks like it is going to consist of basically full time zoom event management of herds of children and I am just not going to have the Can)

Mod(s): Lanna, others would be great

Open or Closed: Open

Type: Full-length live panel

Category: Single Fandom

Description: Witches and wizards and watches and DEATH, oh my!

Other notes: I don't have very many organized thoughts about panel talking-points, but I'd want to keep it focused on the books and not on TV adaptations (because I haven't seen any of them).

Mod(s): Lanna, others would be great

Open or Closed: Open

Type: Full-length live panel

Category: Meta

Description: Wait, that person's not the main character? Those people have never interacted? This storyline isn't fanon but actually really did happen???? Let's talk about reading fic for canons we don't know much about!

Other notes: Would love other mods.
lannamichaels: A LGBT pride rainbow made up of 10 lines going across the page, creating a slanted rainbow. (pride)

Title: Putting The Trans In Transformative

Mod(s): Lanna, others

Open or Closed: Open

Type: Full-length live panel

Category: Meta

Description: AUs give us all the power. What do we do when we take our canon cis characters and make them trans? What changes do we make to them and to their lives when we do it? What comments are we making when we do it? How have trans AUs changed over the years?

Other notes: I could probably do this alone but ideally I'd want a couple co-mods, if possible.

These are panels from 2014's schedule that I'd love to see repeated.

Title: Slash Through the Ages
Mod(s):
Open or Closed: Open
Type: Full-length live panel
Category: Meta
Description: Let's talk about our grandparents' slash. And their grandparents' slash. And all the way back to people squeeing about Enkidu and Gilgamesh in proto-Sumerian. Let us share stories of legendary Holmes/Watson porn from the 1890s, let us read dirty ditties in 19th century French about Enjolras and Grantaire's derriere; let us find Regency gents pruriently speculating about Darcy and Bingley, and read the bit in Don Quixote where Cervantes vindictively josses all the fic in progress and gloats about it. And let's discuss the joys and challenges of shipping pairings that have been shipped since before anyone living was yet born!
Other notes:

Title: Not Your Fandom's OTP
Mod(s):
Open or Closed: Open
Type: Full-length live panel
Category: Meta
Description: Do you think Harry should have ended up with Neville? Are you a Scott/Stiles fan in a universe of Sterek? Have you waded through thousands of Marvel fics for the handful of Tony/Pepper/Steve stories and wept when you reached the end of them? Here's a panel for folks who love tiny pairings in big fandoms. Let's talk about how to hold up under a tide of 'but that's not what I was looking for!' and figure out if there are ways to increase fannish participation in rare pairs (so that you don't have to write them all yourself).
Other notes:

Title: Where Do Slashbabies Come From?
Mod(s):
Open or Closed: Open
Type: Full-length live panel
Category: Meta
Description: Adoption, mpreg, ABO, surrogacy, babies falling from the sky, oopses, dead mommies. Acquiring children lives at an intersection of fun fannish fantasy and the complicated reality of queer family building. Let's talk about that, and all the stuff that goes into putting the kid in kidfic.
Other notes:

Title: Fun With Inverted Tropes
Mod(s):
Open or Closed: Open
Type: Full-length live panel
Category: Meta
Description: We all know the classics: accidental baby acquisition, huddling for warmth, woke up married, undercover in a gay bar, amnesia. What happens when you turn it inside out and upside down? From "woke up straight" to "the aliens made them AVOID doing it," what are your favorite inverted or subverted tropes? We'll talk about our favorite trope inversion fanworks and what tropes we'd like to see switched around next.

Title: Fanart for Embryos
Mod(s): la_dissonance + one or two others ideally
Open or Closed: Open
Type: Full-length live panel
Category: How-to
Description: Fanart: how does it work? Many people draw but not everyone posts fanart. For people new to art or people new to fanart specifically, this panel will discuss the very basic, preschool level questions such as: where to draw? How to come up with ideas? How to make pictures look good? What do people want to see? Posting...where? How?
Other notes: I've got the novice fan artist angle covered and would love a co-mod who's more familiar with fanart conventions to bounce ideas around with!
